Rules

D1. This website provides the ESB2023 Competition Guidelines and Rules to guide entrants in preparing and sending their entries. The Styles to be used are AABC 2022 and are available from the AABC website.

Exceptions are:

Extra Special Bitter - which will be judged using the BJCP 2008 8C Guidelines.

Janet’s Brown Ale  There are a lot of recipe resources available including in Jamil Zainasheff & John Palmer - Brewing Classic Styles p143-144 and the  AHA website to name but two.

Australian Pale (Pacific) Ale – think Stone and Wood Pacific Ale, Coopers Pacific Ale, etc., etc.

More details here https://prstemp.wixsite.com/esbcomp/specialstyles

D2. Entries. No more than two entries are allowed from each entrant in any one Category. [ Categories are Lightweight, Middleweight, Heavyweight, and Wobbly Boot] Within this rule, no more than one entry is allowed in any one style.

D3. Amateur brews. The competition is restricted to amateur brews, that is to beers not subject to excise duty. This means any beer not fermented on licensed brewing premises is eligible, including beers made using extract kits, wort kits, or any other source of fresh wort. Brew-On-Premises beers are ineligible as these are subject to excise duty. Entries must be submitted under the brewer's own name.

D5. Containers. Each entry must consist of a single container of at least 500 mL and no more than 1000mL in volume. Both glass and plastic bottles and aluminium cans are acceptable. Containers should not have any unique identifying features other than possibly a batch code on the bottle caps.  Containers will not be returned to entrants. [Note where the software standard text mentions bottle this means a container]

The entry fee shall be $7.50 per entry and must be paid beforehand via PayPal (who also charge a small fee)

All mailed entries must be received at the mailing location by the shipping deadline - please allow for shipping time. The competition organizers are not responsible for miscategorised entries, and mailed entries that are not received by the entry deadline, or entries that arrived damaged.

Best of Show

The award of the Champion Beer of the Show will be the beer that receives the highest number of judging points in the championship. In the event of equal top scores for two or more beers, the Champion Beer will be decided using the criteria for resolving tied scores given in rule D8.

Note where there are multiple teams of judges for a style and a mini-Best of Show (BOS) is needed, then the highest scoring beer may not be chosen. In that case the score of the winner of the mini-BOS will be considered for the Champion Beer of Show.

Awards

D6. Judging. Judging will be by blind tasting. Where possible, each judging panel will include at least one BJCP-qualified judge. Neither the judges nor the stewards serving the judges should know the name of the brewer whose beer is being served. Judges decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into. Completed judging/score sheets will be returned to the brewers within three weeks of the completion of judging.

D7. Category Awards. Prizes will be awarded for the first, second, and third-placed beers in each category based on the judging scores.

D8. Tied scores. In the event of tied scores in determining the first three placegetters, placings will be resolved either by the judging panel during judging or using a progressive countback until the tie is resolved based on: a) highest score for Overall Impression; b) highest score for Flavour; c) lowest range of individual judge scores (smallest spread of scores across panel); d) the judging panel will be requested to resolve the tie.
